Abstract: Natural gas superior calorific value (SCV) is fundamental to fair pricing in global energy trade and the implementation of energy metering systems. As a primary-standard instrument for direct calorific value measurement, the accuracy of a Rossini-type gas calorimeter is significantly affected by the stability and uniformity of the temperature field in its thermostatic bath system. This paper systematically reviews the research progress of thermostatic bath systems for primary-standard natural gas calorimeters at leading metrological institutions worldwide. Through multi-dimensional horizontal comparison, it deeply analyzes the evolution, technical advantages and disadvantages of key components: temperature control strategies of thermostatic jackets, physical thermal insulation and sealing methods, structures of heat-conducting parts, stirring and flow-guiding structures, burner and waste gas heat exchange tube structures, winding positions of electrical calibration heating wires, and temperature measurement schemes and points of high-precision sensors. Finally, future research priorities are discussed, including coupled optimization of the major bath components, improved evaluation and correction of stirring heat and moisture-related effects, and further assessment of emerging stirring, insulation, and outer-bath control technologies.
