Digital collectives in precarious work: comparing gig workers’ common voices across online communities
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: As gig workers receive inadequate support from digital labor platforms and (inter)national institutions, many face systemic challenges—such as income insecurity, algorithmic management, and social isolation—and turn to online communities instead. Identification with such shared spaces is fundamental to fostering relational connections and collective practices that help workers cope and succeed. However, these spaces remain poorly understood. This study examines how social media affordances and gig work type shape what social identity scholars call a “common voice” (i.e., the collective expression of identification in an online community). Using computational sentiment analysis and quantitative content analysis of 8,319 posts and 153,440 comments from six of the largest Reddit communities for gig workers, the study finds that common voices emerge, despite the atomizing characteristics of gig work (e.g., geographic dispersion and platform mediation) and the constraint of social cues on the platform that hosts the community. Moreover, common voices significantly differ between platform-specific communities and generic communities for gig workers in themes, sentiments, message length and image use. These findings extend scholarship on gig work, identification, and social media affordances by highlighting their intersection—showing how gig worker communities can act as digital collectives that foster identification and work relationships.
