Effects of low-temperature on burst pressure of PTFE membranes and the subsequent hydrogen vent deflagration dynamics

Abstract: Low temperature affects both hydrogen combustion and membrane burst pressure, thereby altering vented-deflagration dynamics. To investigate these effects, PTFE membrane burst experiments were conducted at different temperatures and thicknesses to establish a burst-pressure model, which was incorporated into a validated SAS–TF framework to analyze flame propagation and pressure evolution of premixed hydrogen–air mixtures from 200 to 300 K. Under constant burst pressure, the peak overpressure at 200 K is 29 % higher than that at 300 K, while the maximum flame speed increases by less than 10 %. When temperature-dependent burst pressure is considered, the peak overpressure increases by more than 50 % and the maximum flame speed by over 30 %. Using the ambient-temperature burst pressure at 200 K would underestimate the flame speed and overpressure. These results show that flame acceleration is more strongly associated with burst pressure, whereas overpressure is influenced by both temperature and burst pressure.
