Five Old Words for Breath and the Roots of Pranayama

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Five old words for breath from different languages, and what they reveal about the origins of pranayama and breath-centered practice. Background reading. Here is an odd fact about language. In many of the world's older tongues, the word for breath is also the word for spirit, life, or soul. Speakers did not choose this by accident. They noticed that a living body breathes and a lifeless one does not, and they let the vocabulary record the observation. This article follows five of those words to explore where breath-centered practice comes from. It is a general background guide, not a summary of any book, and it makes no medical claims. The reason to take this route is that it frames a title such as THE BILLIONAIRE BREATH MASTERY (https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=xhrEQAAQBAJ) in its larger human context. Its subtitle mentions ancient breathwork, pranayama, and breathing techniques. Before any technique makes sense, it helps to see why so many cultures converged on breath as a doorway to something deeper.
