The impact of servant leadership on community development across cultures: A character trait analysis
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Leadership in community development shapes the design and implementation of effective interventions. Servant leadership, grounded in the principle that leaders must first serve those they lead to inspire and facilitate positive change, offers a compelling framework for this process. This paper explores the role of servant leadership in community development and its significance in advancing community well-being and fostering meaningful progress. Employing a participatory action research design, this study draws on the experiences of thirty-one community development leaders interviewed by thirty-one participatory action researchers across fourteen countries. Findings suggest that community development is a tangible outcome of servant leadership, extending beyond material advancement to include the spiritual well-being of community members. Alongside established traits such as empathy, listening, and healing, the study identifies trust and resilience as important characteristics shaped by life experiences and community needs. It further demonstrates how national and cultural contexts influence community development priorities and leadership practice.
