Factors influencing the intention to use smart wristbands among patients with COPD: an extended UTAUT model

Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) imposes a substantial global health burden. Despite the considerable potential of wearable devices for early detection and disease management, suboptimal engagement limits their clinical utility. This study aims to identify factors associated with the intention to use smart wristbands among patients with COPD. The study extends the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) by incorporating health risk perception and interface presentation. A sequential mixed-methods design was employed, commencing with semi-structured interviews ( n = 28), followed by a questionnaire survey ( n = 233). Structural equation modeling was used to validate the measurement model and examine the hypothesized relationships. All six constructs demonstrated statistically significant positive associations with intention to use ( P < 0.05). Health risk perception (β = 0.272, P < 0.001) and social influence (β = 0.271, P < 0.001) were the primary correlates of intention to use. This study extends UTAUT by identifying factors correlated with COPD patients’ intention to use smart wristbands. The findings offer practical insights for user-oriented device design and intervention strategies, thereby supporting the promotion of digital health monitoring among COPD patients.
