The article examines the history and current state of research into Mordvinian onomastics. It analyzes both the major achievements in the ethnic onomastics of the people and new, relevant aspects of the field, as well as their scientific and practical significance. The research is based on the author's field materials, archival documents, and previously unpublished manuscripts by Professor N. F. Mokshin, a Doctor of Historical Sciences. Examples of surnames of Mordvinian origin are extracted from reference literature, documents, periodicals, and other mass media, including television and radio. Pre-Christian Mordvinian names, names of villages, towns, and rivers with Mordvinian etymology are given. In some cases, the transformation of surnames and their possible variations are indicated, and surnames with Mordvinian and Russian linguistic bases are identified. The Mordvinian adaptation of Russian (calendar) names is also covered in some of the surnames. The study traces the elements of interaction between the Mordvins and various peoples, primarily the Russians, within the framework of ethnic onomastics. The research was conducted using field ethnography methods and textual analysis.
