Influence of a Novel Pole Winding Shape on the Performance of a Switched Reluctance Motor

Abstract: This article addresses research challenges related to improving switched reluctance motor (SRM) performance, particularly for applications in electric vehicle propulsion systems and starter-generator units. The primary objective of the study is to increase energy conversion efficiency by reducing winding losses. The efficiency improvement was achieved by developing a novel stator winding topology. Conventional SRMs typically employ a double-layer concentric winding. The authors proposed two original stator winding configurations that significantly increase the fill factor. These two variants were compared with the conventional winding arrangement. Based on numerical analyses, the influence of the proposed winding topologies on the static characteristics of the SRM, as well as its performance under constant-torque and constant-power operating conditions, was investigated. The numerical results were experimentally validated using a prototype SRM equipped with the proposed stator winding configuration. Laboratory measurements confirmed the precision of the numerical predictions.
