Type: article
Abstract: The global economic landscape is undergoing significant transformation, driven by the rapid expansion of the gig workforce. “Positioned outside conventional employer - employee relationships, gig workers often navigate irregular incomes, limited social security, and inadequate institutional protection, making financial resilience a critical yet underexplored dimension of the platform economy. With this workforce continuing to grow, labor policies need to cater to the upliftment of this workforce and consider the dynamic incline this economy can promise for a smart future. A range of labour policies of key importance to gig workers is drawn on by this paper, with their provisions examined through secondary data analysis. Adopting a triple lens approach - Rajdharma (Policy Framework), Artha (Economic Framework) and Lokasangraha (Social Framework) dimensions, vantage points on how digital platforms and policies can adopt initiatives in these frames are proposed by the paper. The existing regulatory landscape governing gig work is further examined by it, to develop a comprehensive understanding of the platform economy. As India marches towards Viksit Bharat by 2047, it becomes paramount to leverage the potential of this workforce by understanding the opportunities and challenges faced by them.
