Structural and Philosophical Perspectives on Twacha: a Harmonized Review of Traditional Ayurvedic and Contemporary Dermatological Concepts
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Ayurveda, the foundational Indian science of medicine, offers a highly sophisticated framework for understanding human anatomy and physiology. Classical authorities like Acharya Charaka and Acharya Sushruta documented the skin (Twacha) extensively, defining it in the Sushruta Samhita as the primary anatomical seat of tactile perception (Adhishthana of Sparshanendriya). Far from being a passive external envelope, Twacha is recognized as a dynamic structure intricately linked to tissue nourishment (Dhatu Poshana), systemic equilibrium, and metabolic vitality. Similarly, contemporary biomedical science identifies the skin as the largest organ of the integumentary system, acting as a crucial immunological barrier and sensory interface. While most cutaneous disorders carry low mortality rates, their profound impact on psychological well-being and life quality underscores the clinical value of precise anatomical insights.
