‘Snapshots in the Garden’: A Visual Essay of Unwanted Garden Photographs
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This is a visual essay that uses old, vintage, and unwanted garden photographs sourced from online auction sites, junk shops, and antique stores. The paper presents 15 images that highlight the continuity of the domestic garden space in personal photography as well as their analytical value in terms of the garden being in the foreground or background, capturing the extraordinary and the mundane, offering relational clues to power class, race and gender or patterns of consumption, as well as the liminal nature of gardens as public or private.
