A clinical case series evaluation of cross-linked gelatin foam to treat naturally occurring periodontal pockets and furcation defects in dogs
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This clinical case series evaluated periodontal debridement and the application of a biodegradable liquid scaffold composed of a porcine-derived crosslinked gelatin foam for the treatment of naturally occurring furcation defects and combined suprabony and infrabony defects in client-owned dogs. A total of 21 treated sites in 9 client-owned dogs were evaluated. Periodontal probing, intraoral computed radiography (CR), and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) under general anesthesia were performed. Full-mouth periodontal treatment and closed (13 sites) or open (8 sites) root planing were performed before the application of the flowable scaffold. The mean duration between treatment and recheck was 169 days (with a range of 101-388 days and a median of 167 days). The mean decrease in periodontal pocket depth was 1.9 mm. The mean furcation stage decreased by 1.4, and the treated tooth periodontal stage was reduced by a mean of 0.8.
