Love as a foundation for global citizenship in human-centred AI-driven higher education institutions – a theoretical exploration
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Purpose This article aims at exploring global citizenship in the context of higher education institutions (HEIs) which are increasingly affected by artificial intelligence (AI)-driven interactions. By using AI in a human-centred way, educators can expand ways to create global citizenship, offer personalised and empathetic learning while transcending conventional boundaries of education. AI technologies, including natural language processing, machine translation and adaptive learning systems, enable learners to engage with diverse linguistic and cultural materials in increasingly meaningful ways. These tools facilitate immersive language learning, simulate intercultural interactions and provide real-time feedback connected to individual needs in contemporary HEIs. Design/methodology/approach This research uses a theoretical/conceptual approach. Findings While human-centred AI-driven HEIs are gaining importance, the need to create awareness of character strengths and human-centred new learning environments increases as well. In this article, it is argued that pedagogical love, as a character strength, becomes more important in contemporary HEIs than ever before. By integrating AI thoughtfully and ethically into curricula, educators and institutions can contribute to the education of empathetic, multilingual global citizens. Research limitations/implications This research is limited to a qualitative theoretical and conceptual study and may build the base for future empirical studies. Practical implications Love, as a character strength, might support mental health, well-being and human interconnectedness. Originality/value This approach can strengthen the role of HEIs in creating a more peaceful, integrated world.
