Low-Cost and Commodity Platforms in the Wireless Threat Landscape: ESP, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Wi-Fi Pineapple, and Flipper Zero
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This paper examines how low-cost and commodity hardware platforms (ESP-based modules, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Wi-Fi Pineapple, and Flipper Zero) reshape the wireless threat landscape primarily through accessibility rather than by introducing new protocol vulnerabilities. We present a public-source taxonomy of five platform classes, map them onto the CIA triad at category level, analyze the human and operational factors that amplify residual risk (the “self-provisioned gap”), and propose a four-layer hardening framework (protocol, network, monitoring, and user/operator). The study is desk-based and deliberately excludes attack procedures, proof-of-concept material, and new vulnerability claims. The central contribution is a structured separation of tool accessibility from inherent vulnerability.
