Sulfur Clusters Anchored on Carbon Enables High‐Loading, Low‐Coordination Noble Metal Cluster Catalysts for Electrocatalysis

Abstract: ABSTRACT A rational catalyst design demands a versatile platform integrating high intrinsic activity, optimal atomic utilization, high loading, and stability. We report an ultra‐stable three‐dimensional sulfur cluster anchored on a carbon scaffold, which forms a multi‐directional anchoring network for noble metals, effectively overcoming the inherent short‐range limitation of strong metal‐support interactions. A 40 wt% Platinum cluster catalyst with cluster size of over 1.5 nm and an average Pt–Pt coordination number of ∼3 was successfully fabricated. The resulting Pt/SCC achieved an overpotential of only 3.9 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 with a mass activity (MA) of 17.5 A/mg Pt in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , and requires just 9.9 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 and a MA of 0.47 A/mg Pt in 1.0 M KOH. It also shows super durability with marginal loss in activity after 100 000 cyclic voltammetry cycles in both conditions. Pt/SCC delivers exceptional atomic utilization, slashing electrolyzer Pt loading by >50% without compromising long‐term durability.
