Subretinal Photovoltaic Prostheses in Geographic Atrophy: Vision Restoration and Rehabilitation Limits

Type: article
Abstract: Subretinal photovoltaic prostheses stimulate surviving retinal neurons within areas of geographic atrophy caused by age-related macular degeneration. The PRIMA system combines a photovoltaic microarray, cameraequipped glasses, near-infrared projection, and external image processing. In the PRIMAvera trial, 26 of 32 participants assessed at 12 months achieved an improvement of at least 0.2 logMAR while peripheral vision remained stable. The technology supports high-contrast central form vision, letter recognition, and selected reading tasks, but a restricted field, monochromatic perception, reduced contrast sensitivity, and dependence on magnification prevent restoration of normal foveal vision.Clinical benefit depends on retinal integrity, implant placement, and structured rehabilitation.
