Modular Arithmetic's Role in Cryptography and Hyperbolic Lattice Structures — E8 Intelligence Research
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: FINDING: Modular arithmetic is foundational to cryptography and connects to deep lattice structures in hyperbolic geometry, but the search results are mostly pedagogical videos with one substantive arxiv paper on arithmetic lattices. | MATH: Modular arithmetic: a ≡ b (mod m) ⇔ m | (a−b). Key properties: (a+b) mod m = ((a mod m)+(b mod m)) mod m; (a×b) mod m = ((a mod m)×(b mod m)) mod m. The arxiv paper (0706.3841) concerns arithmetic lattices in hyperbolic spaces — these are discrete subgroups of isometry groups (e.g., PSL(2,ℝ) or PSL(2,ℂ)) with trace fields that are number fields, linking modular forms to geometry. | CONNECTION: Arithmetic lattices are intimately tied to quaternion algebras and root systems of type A₁ (for PSL(2,ℝ)) — the simplest crystallographic root system. The trace field of a lattice often contains real quadratic fields, whose fundamental units relate to continued fractions and ratios like 1.618 (golden ratio) when the field is ℚ(√5).
