Four Girls by Diego Velázquez

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: This article approaches Diego Velázquez’s Las Meninas as the result of an unusual compositional solution whose logic can be reconstructed step by step. Reconsidering the reconstructive tradition and engaging critically with Svetlana Alpers, it argues that Las Meninas should be understood not as a paradox generated at the level of representation, but as a pictorial construction from which the problem of representation itself emerges. The painting synthesises observations that need not have belonged to a single physical moment but are organised around a single portrait problem. Comparison with Velázquez’s portraits of royal children—from Baltasar Carlos to the different images of Margarita—shows how status, ceremony, and social form are redistributed between the child’s body and the surrounding pictorial system. A final comparison with John Singer Sargent’s The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit extends this problem beyond court culture: where Velázquez synthesises temporally distinct observations into a single event, Sargent reverses the operation, turning the simultaneity of four children into a temporal sequence of social formation.
