The Denkstunde: A Unit of Account for a Finite Mind
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: Thinking is the only major input to modern work with no unit. This working paper defines the Denkstunde (Dh): one hour of focused, undivided cognitive work by one person, roughly 66,000 per working life. The unit turns one question into something that can be priced: have the thinking hours in this context already converged to the relevant things? If yes, importing beats deriving; if no, one's own hours belong at the frontier; if a field only looks converged, one is about to trust a deposit that does not exist. Using steam-boiler safety as a converged case and the 2001 Medina County Fair explosion as a broken chain, the paper proposes five portable questions (volume, feedback severity, accumulation, verifiability, continuity), distinguishes genuine convergence from pseudo-convergence, outlines a three-step import procedure (proof of concept, proof of context, primes), and applies the unit at species scale as people × share free to think × hours each × reuse.
