Effects of a 30-session Structured Yoga Intervention on Spirometric Parameters in Adult Subjects: A Quasi-experimental Study

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Background: Optimal pulmonary function is a fundamental physiological requirement, facilitating the gas exchange essential for metabolic homeostasis and adequate tissue oxygenation. Impaired lung function is strongly associated with diminished physical performance and the persistence of chronic respiratory conditions, which significantly compromise the quality of life. Objective: The primary objective of this study was to investigate the effects of a short-term yoga intervention on respiratory function in adult subjects. Methodology: One hundred and eight participants were allocated into two equal groups: an experimental group (n = 54) and a control group (n = 54). The experimental group completed a 30-session structured yoga module, while the control group maintained their habitual daily activities. To evaluate the impact of the intervention, lung function was assessed using a digital spirometer. Results: In the experimental group, post-intervention data showed a statistically significant improvement in forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV₁), forced vital capacity (FVC), and maximum voluntary ventilation (MVV) with P < 0.05. In all the outcome variables, no statistically significant improvement in the control group could be observed. Conclusion: Based on the recorded data, the present study concluded that a 30-session systematic yoga intervention is effective in enhancing overall respiratory function. The findings indicate statistically significant improvements in respiratory outcomes within the experimental group, suggesting a beneficial impact of the intervention on pulmonary function for the cohort. Furthermore, the correlational analysis observed no statistically significant association between participant age and lung capacity.
