Programmable Formic Acid Decomposition in Flow on an Interdigitated Internal Catalytic Condenser Beyond the Sabatier Limit
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: Catalysis has been defined by the relationships between catalyst active site composition and structure, its surrounding environment, and the resulting surface elementary steps leading to faster or more selective product formation. This structure-function relationship has driven the development of entirely new classes of catalytic materials that could introduce new catalytic functionality including zeolites, MOFs, MXenes, single atom alloys, and others.[1,2,3] These materials all have the common limitation of static active sites relative to the time scale of a catalytic turnover, which limits their activity to the Sabatier maximum turnover frequency and only permits reaction towards equilibrium.[4,5] These two restrictions have required chemical processes to be designed around the requirements of the catalyst, thereby limiting the potential for unconventional and more efficient chemical manufacturing.
