Practifacture: definition of an art term
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Definition of practifacture, an art term coined by the artist Ian Jermyn (north-west coast of Ireland) in October 2026. practifacture (n.): 1. Practice and facture as one act: a way of working in which the doing and the made cannot be separated. 2. The trace of that act in a work: the visible record of attending, gathering and making, together with the marks left by the material itself and the forces acting on it. The document sets out the definition, a commentary drawing on Aristotle's distinction between praxis and poiesis, an etymology relating the term to facture and the Russian faktura, its origin in Jermyn's practice in sculpture, installation, film, lumino-kinetic works and relief impressions, and references.
