Host-based security metrics in Industrial environments
Year: 2025
Type: dissertation
Abstract: In recent years, industrial environments, which support many critical activities in our society, have been adopting new technologies like Industry 4.0 and IIoT, which brings significant benefits to organisations such as improved efficiency of operational processes, greater connectivity, increased quality and quantity of operational data, integration with enterprise systems, among others. However, this evolution of industrial environments is associated with an increased attack surface, resulting higher security risks for organisations. There has also been a notable increase in the number of attacks against these environments, as well as their level of sophistication. As a result, this dissertation aims to develop a security information and event management component, the Argus SIEM, with the requirements of industrial environments in mind, capable of collecting, processing, and correlating events from various relevant sources in industrial environments to detect malicious activity in industrial networks through various methods. This requires the integration of various security tools into a unified system. Finally, with the help of existing frameworks focusing on the security of industrial environments, it was possible to validate the developed system’s capabilities against real attacks and scenarios.
