Database Query Optimization for Large-Scale Applications

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This paper presents a practical review of database query optimization techniques for large-scale applications. As applications handle increasing volumes of data and database requests, inefficient queries can increase response latency, CPU utilization, memory consumption, storage input/output, and infrastructure costs. The paper reviews key optimization techniques, including index design, SQL query rewriting, join strategies, database statistics, pagination, connection pooling, caching, partitioning, read replicas, and workload monitoring. It also explains how execution plans and workload measurements can help identify performance bottlenecks and guide optimization decisions. A measurement-driven optimization workflow is presented, covering slow-query identification, baseline measurement, bottleneck diagnosis, targeted changes, performance comparison, and production monitoring. The paper also discusses the trade-offs between query latency, throughput, write performance, data freshness, scalability, security, and operational complexity. This work is a practical narrative review rather than a new benchmark study. It does not claim a fixed percentage of performance improvement. The paper emphasizes that database optimization should be based on representative workloads, actual execution evidence, and continuous monitoring while preserving query correctness and application security.
