Knowledge, attitudes, and clinical use of platelet-rich fibrin and its advanced derivatives among dentists: a cross-sectional survey

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) protocols differ in preparation and physical characteristics, and information on dentists’ understanding and clinical use remains limited. This study assessed dentists’ knowledge, attitudes, and self-reported use of PRF, including L-PRF, A-PRF/A-PRF+, T-PRF, i-PRF, and Alb-PRF. In this cross-sectional online survey, 501 practicing dentists completed a self-administered questionnaire covering professional characteristics, 21 knowledge items, and seven attitude items. Group comparisons used non-parametric tests. Exploratory item-level associations were assessed using chi-square statistics and conditional Monte Carlo p-values where appropriate, followed by Holm adjustment across 140 comparisons. Of the 501 participants, 59.9% reported no formal PRF training and 87.4% reported no current PRF use on the frequency question. The corrected knowledge score had a median of 9 (interquartile range, 6–15) and a mean of 10.25 ± 5.60 out of 21; the attitude score had a median of 23 (interquartile range, 21–26) and a mean of 23.08 ± 4.60 out of 35. Formal PRF training was associated with both total scores. In exploratory item-level analyses, 26 of 140 associations remained significant after Holm adjustment. The sample expressed favorable views of PRF alongside variation in responses to protocol-specific questions and frequently reported practical barriers. Formal PRF training was associated with higher knowledge and attitude scores, but the cross-sectional design does not support a causal interpretation. Not applicable.
