Abstract: Learning Objectives Examine the relationships between climate change and wildfire risk. How is anthropogenic climate change impacting natural wildfire regimes and changing risks to humans? You will learn the basic components needed for fire, and how long-term climate variability influences those components. This lays the foundation for understanding how human-caused climate change is altering the frequency, seasonality, and severity of fires across the globe. Understand how ecosystems are naturally resilient to wildfire and the role humans have played in modifying this resilience. What strategies have ecosystems evolved to survive fire? You will explore the ways that different species, particularly trees, interact with fire, and the ways that postcolonial forest and fire management abolished natural ecological resilience. This loss can both be reversed through proactive forest management and inform human pathways for fire resilience.3. Understand the unique role fire plays in human evolutionary history and how wildfire negatively impacts humans both directly and indirectly. How has this role changed to produce contemporary wildfire disasters? The relationship between humans and fire has evolved substantially over the last century, leading to the contemporary wildfire disaster.Understanding how disasters are a product of both biophysical risk and social vulnerability is critical to identifying solutions that will effectively mitigate wildfire disasters. Identify key features of successfully mitigating wildfire disasters. What does it look like to live successfully with wildfire? You will learn about the broad range of mitigation and policy solutions that can help to prevent wildfire disasters. We will always have wildfire across much of the globe, and recent case studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of different types of activities in helping us live with wildfire.
