Nuclear Spin Qubits in Neural Processes: Fisher's ³¹P Hypothesis — E8 Intelligence Research

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: FINDING: Matthew Fisher proposes nuclear spin qubits (phosphorus-31) in neural processes, with quantum coherence timescales tied to molecular geometry and spin dynamics, not a proven mechanism but a concrete physical hypothesis. | MATH: Fisher's model centers on phosphorus-31 (³¹P) nuclear spin-1/2; key timescale is spin decoherence time \( T_2 \), with proposed quantum processing via spin-spin interactions (J-coupling) between ³¹P nuclei in Posner molecules \( \text{Ca}_9(\text{PO}_4)_6 \). The relevant Hamiltonian includes Zeeman term \( H_Z = -\hbar \gamma B_0 \hat{I}_z \) and dipolar/J-coupling \( H_J = J \hat{I}_1 \cdot \hat{I}_2 \). Fisher's criterion for quantum cognition requires \( T_2 \) > synaptic timescale (~ms), and he estimates \( T_2 \sim 10^2 \)–\( 10^3 \) s for isolated ³¹P spins in a shielded environment, constrained by \( T_2^{-1} \propto \gamma^2 B_{\text{noise}}^2 \tau_c \) (motional narrowing). No closed-form equation for consciousness emerges; the mathematics is Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK. Part of the E8 Intelligence Research series.
