Design of a Dual-Source Solar-Grid DC Power Supply with Automatic Energy Management

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The world’s growing demand for clean energy has brought renewable technologies into the spotlight, with solar photovoltaic (PV) power leading the way due to its sustainable and eco-friendly nature. But solar power has a challenge: it depends heavily on weather and sunlight, making it tricky to guarantee a steady flow of electricity all the time. To tackle this, researchers have designed a smart hybrid power system that seamlessly blends solar energy with the traditional utility grid. This system prioritizes solar power whenever it’s available, and automatically switches to the grid when the sun isn’t shining enough, ensuring an uninterrupted supply of direct current (DC) power. The setup includes a solar PV array, a grid interface, an isolated DC–DC converter, and a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) system to squeeze out the maximum energy from the panels. Additionally, a PI-based controller keeps the DC bus voltage stable. Tested through simulations in MATLAB/ Simulink, the system proves to maintain a steady voltage, smoothly transition between energy sources, and efficiently harness solar power. This hybrid solution offers a reliable, simple, and cost-effective way to keep DC power flowing without interruption. It holds great promise for use in homes, businesses, and small industries, helping to push the adoption of clean energy while ensuring energy reliability and efficiency.
