Kidney Disease in the News, 2019–2026: Attention, Geography and Tone of Global Coverage, and How It Compares with Research and Invention

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: We measure how kidney disease, kidney failure, dialysis and kidney transplantation were covered in a global news index from January 2019 to July 2026, using 115,696 de-duplicated items, and set that coverage beside 121,198 research papers (2015–2025) and 17,423 patent families (2015–2024). The index carries research abstracts as well as news reports, and we report where this shapes the results. Six results stand out: Attention. Kidney disease took 7.42 of every 10,000 indexed articles in 2025, 21.4% fewer than the 9.44 of 2019. Raw counts rose, but the index grew faster. Geography. The United States holds 51.8% of located items, close to its weight in the index (lift 1.07). India holds 17.36% (lift 1.31). Ghana is the most over-represented country (5.21), and Africa the most over-represented continent (1.63). States. Within India, Telangana (2.15), Andhra Pradesh (1.64) and Madhya Pradesh (1.44) lead. Within the United States, Massachusetts (4.4) leads, and New Jersey (0.12) trails. Tone and urgency. Only 21.8% of items are negative in tone (all news: 33.6%), yet 87.1% are rated critical priority (all news: 42.6%). Measurement. In a hand check, 32 of 40 matched openings were research abstracts. Abstracts dated by year only push 20.59% of a typical year's items into January. Research and invention. Kidney disease papers rose from 13.83 to 20.74 per 10,000 papers between 2015 and 2025. Patent families grew 1.99-fold from 2015 to 2024, and China's office holds 68.7% of family–office filings.
