Mapping care interventions for people living with motor neurone disease: a living evidence and gap map

Year: 2026

Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: Motor neurone disease (MND) is a debilitating, life-limiting neurodegenerative disease that has no cure. Caring for a person living with MND requires a multidisciplinary team delivering interventions to address symptoms. We aimed to map evidence supporting care of those living with MND. Evidence and gap maps (EGMs) were developed according to Campbell and JBI guidance for scoping reviews. Databases searched included CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PsycINFO with no date restriction. Articles describing care interventions for people living with MND, carers, asymptomatic genetic carriers, family, friends, and healthcare professionals were included. 2390 reports were drawn from 1594 articles that were included across five EGMs, supportive and symptom management (n = 673 articles), pharmacological (n = 592), models of care (n = 196), medical and clinical interventions (n = 185), and technology and equipment (n = 91). Interventions primarily addressed people who are living with MND (n = 1732). No articles were identified specifically concerning First Nations Peoples, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Peoples, or those living in remote, rural or regional areas. MND care interventions are diverse. Further research is needed to understand options for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Peoples, First Nations Peoples, and those living in rural, regional, and remote communities.
