Drought in the News, 2019–2026: Timing, Geography and Tone of Global Drought Coverage, and How It Compares with Research and Invention

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: We measure how drought was covered in a global news index from January 2019 to July 2026, using 108,105 de-duplicated drought articles, and set that coverage beside 51,502 research papers (2015–2025) and 4,482 patent families (2015–2024) on drought. Six results stand out: Peaks and decline. Drought took its largest share of news in August 2022, the month of the 2022 European drought, at 27.88 articles per 10,000. Its annual share fell 48.2% from 2022 to 2025 and ended below the 2019 level. Weak seasonality. July to September hold 30.08% of a typical year's drought articles, against 25% for an even spread, so coverage is spread across the year. Geography. The United States holds 43.65% of located drought news but is slightly under-represented (lift 0.9). India is under-represented (0.63). Somalia (56.25), Zambia (31.08), Zimbabwe (24.8) and Ethiopia (15.48) are the most over-represented countries. Within India, Karnataka (4.46) leads; within the United States, New Mexico (4.51), Nebraska (3.25) and Arizona (2.74). Tone and urgency. 58.7% of drought articles are negative in tone (all news: 33.6%), and 78.7% are rated critical priority (all news: 42.6%). Measurement. 12.63% of raw matches for drought vocabulary were removed as sporting ("title drought"), figurative ("IPO drought") or headline-digest uses. Counting them would inflate coverage. Research and invention. Drought papers grew from 5.35 to 9.73 per 10,000 papers between 2015 and 2025, a 1.82-fold rise in share. Drought patent families grew 2.65-fold from 2015 to 2024, and China's office held 87.4% of office-family pairs.
