QPySequence: Pythonic Sequence Programming for Qblox Hardware

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This work presents QPySequence, a Python library providing a Pythonic interface to Q1ASM, Qblox’s assembly-like language for programming FPGA-based sequencers. The library makes assembly-level quantum control more accessible by combining structured program construction with a compiler that handles common low-level tasks, reducing boilerplate and improving maintainability. The library uses a hierarchical object model built around programs, blocks, and instructions. Native instructions map directly to Q1ASM, while custom instructions provide higher-level abstractions that are expanded during compilation. The compiler performs five sequential passes: sequencer synchronization, custom instruction expansion, register allocation, insertion of no-operation instructions to resolve register read-after-write hazards, and optimization of consecutive wait instructions. The poster illustrates this workflow through a resonator spectroscopy example, combining a 400-point frequency sweep with an outer loop averaging 10,000 shots, and shows the resulting Q1ASM code. It also describes QPySequence’s role in Qilimanjaro’s control stack, where Qililab translates hardware-agnostic QProgram sequences into QPySequence before compilation to Q1ASM. Planned developments include symbolic parameter expressions and the identification of repeated instruction patterns to reduce program size.
