Crystal structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis of phenylalanine hydrobromide

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Amino acid salts represent a diverse class of molecular solids in which ionic interactions and hydrogen bonding between protonated amino acid species and counter-ions govern the formation of supramolecular architectures. Phenylalanine hydrobromide (systematic name: 1-carboxy-2-phenylethan-1-aminium bromide, C 9 H 12 NO 2 + ·Br − ) crystallizes in the chiral orthorhombic space group P 2 1 2 1 2 1 . Its structure is built from protonated phenylalaninium cations, which interact with bromide anions through a network of N—H...Br and O—H...Br hydrogen bonds, forming bilayers propagating parallel to the ab plane, with the polar groups oriented toward the interior of the bilayers. The crystal structure is additionally consolidated by three types of weak T-shaped C( sp 2 )—H...π interactions.
