A Single-Li+ and Electron Mixed Conductor via Intrinsic Ion-Carrier Implantation in a Metal–Organic Framework

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: We report a crystalline metal–organic framework (MOF) that enables efficient Li+ and electron conduction, where a triphenylene ligand functionalized with a propylsulfonate group is designed and utilized to introduce mobile Li+ ions while forming extended conjugation for electron transport. The resulting MOF exhibits a mixed conduction behavior in the solid state with a Li+ conductivity of up to 1.10 mS cm−1 and an electronic conductivity of 15.81 mS cm−1 at room temperature, together with a Li+ transference number close to 1.0. Mechanistic studies reveal that the conformationally dynamic propylsulfonate groups facilitate Li+ transport with low energy barriers in a manner resembling wobbling paddle wheels, and the rigid, conjugated scaffold promotes electronic conduction through in-plane π–d orbital coupling and interlayer interactions. This work establishes an effective bottom-up route for constructing crystalline, porous mixed Li+-electron conductors, offering a new platform for solid-state electrochemical devices requiring synchronized ion and electron transport.
