Pulsed-field travelling-wave magnetophoresis: periodic and quasi-periodic motion at frequency ratios 1:3 and 1:√2

Year: 2026
Type: other
Abstract: Side-by-side comparison of two dark-field microscopy recordings of superparamagnetic particles (Dynabeads M-270, diameter 2.8 micrometer) transported above an exchange-bias layer system with a 5 micrometer head-to-head/tail-to-tail stripe domain pattern (period 10 micrometer).Sinusoidal field pulses along x and z with equal amplitudes Hx,0 = Hz,0 = 4 kA/m, phase difference 90° and base frequency fx = 0.1 Hz. Left: rational frequency ratio fx/fz = 1/3, giving periodic motion that repeats every 10 s. Right: irrational ratio fx/fz = 1/√2, giving quasi-periodic motion that never repeats exactly. Recorded at 100 fps and shown in real time; the first 2 s (field switch-on) are omitted. The plot below the videos shows the mean velocity of the tracked beads (finite differences over 0.1 s).Supplementary material to: Pulsed-field travelling-wave magnetophoresis of magnetic microparticles III: frequency variations.
