Coupling Ontology: A Dimensionless Metric and Three-Tier Topological Evolution Model for Complex Social System Stability

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: Traditional system dynamics research often treats "entities" as the fundamental unit of analysis. This study proposes "Coupling Ontology," arguing that the essence of a complex system is a dynamic network of nodes, connections, and information flows. Its macroscopic stability depends on the self-organization and self-healing capabilities of its micro-coupling networks when facing external perturbations. To quantify this, we introduce a dimensionless System Stability Index (SSI) model and propose a "Three-Tier Coupling Topology Model." Based on a thirty-year longitudinal observation of a high-density human settlement system, this research finds that when the density of core relay nodes crosses the 10 percent percolation threshold and establishes a distributed feedback mechanism with an ultra-short characteristic response time (Tc less than or equal to 1 day), the system can instantly dampen the massive chaotic exponent (Lambda_max) via a high order parameter (r). Empirical evidence shows that this structural coupling suppresses internal noise entropy to an extreme minimum, granting the system exceptional resilience during global asymmetric shocks. This framework not only quantitatively explains the stability of this specific social unit but also provides a novel structural isomorphism perspective for understanding complex systems across disciplines.
