Mathematics Beyond the Classroom: The Power of Out-of-School Activities in Early Childhood Education
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Early childhood is a critical period during which the foundations of an individual’s development start. Math activities conducted outside of school help children learn through interaction with their environment and support mathematical thinking. Out-of-school learning environments offer children the opportunity to learn by doing and experiencing, helping them concretize abstract concepts. This ensures children’s active participation and enables them to in a more meaningful way. In this context, This study aims to explore preschool teachers’ and school administrators’ perceptions of the contribution of mathematics education in out-of-school learning environments. It raises the question: “How do preschool teachers and school administrators perceive the contribution of mathematics activities implemented in out-of-school learning environments?” Qualitative research methods, a type of phenomenological research, were employed in this study. Semi-structured interviews and observation techniques were used to collect data. The study group consists of three different types of kindergartens identified using purposive sampling. The data were analysed thematically. Four main themes were identified: Child Participation and Development, Elements Supporting the Process, Activities, and Environmental Factors. Participants perceived mathematics education in out-of-school learning environments as contributing to children’s development. However, out-of-school activities cannot be implemented at the expected level due to challenges such as insufficient parental support, financial barriers, transportation issues, and a lack of materials and space.
