Type: article
Abstract: This study explored surgical patients’ lived experiences and perceived needs regarding pre-operative music intervention at the Department of Anaesthesiology, Provincial Hospital affiliated with Fuzhou University. A qualitative descriptive phenomenological design was used. Nine adults who had received music intervention in connection with elective surgical care were selected purposively. Semi-structured interviews were conducted during the first two weeks of May 2026, lasted approximately 30–45 minutes, and were manually transcribed and analyzed using Colaizzi’s seven-step method. Five themes emerged: Psychophysiological Relaxation and Anxiety Attenuation through Music Intervention; Cognitive Distraction and Attentional Reorientation via Memory Activation; Emotional Companionship and Perceived Social Support in Clinical Settings; Identity Reconstruction and Autobiographical Meaning-Making through Music; and Cultural Familiarity and Contextual Resonance in Emotional Regulation. Participants described calmer bodily sensations, less intrusive thinking, companionship, renewed connections with personal identity, and comfort associated with familiar music. Their accounts also identified needs for individual choice, comfortable listening equipment, and supportive nursing communication. The essence of the experience involved a movement from fear and uncertainty toward comfort, emotional stability, and meaning-making. Findings informed the Ye Enhanced Pre-Operative Music Intervention Support Framework, a preliminary model integrating physical, cognitive, emotional, identity-related, and cultural dimensions of care. Further expert validation, pilot testing, and refinement of the framework are recommended.
