Updates in the treatment of eating disorders in 2025: a year in review in Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment & Prevention
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: A broad range of relevant and diverse studies on the treatment of eating disorders were published in Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment & Prevention in 2025. We review novel treatment approaches, including interventions for individuals with complex clinical presentations, integrated primary care models, brief psychological treatments, peer support, and virtually delivered interventions. We also examine clinical, psychological, family, and treatment-related factors associated with treatment outcomes and barriers and facilitators to the implementation of Family-Based Treatment. Moreover, we highlight recent developments in caregiver-focused interventions designed to support and strengthen caregiver skills throughout treatment. With regard to binge-eating disorder, we review evidence supporting guided self-help, together with methodological considerations for strengthening future treatment research. Finally, we synthesize articles addressing adaptation needs for underserved populations, including autistic individuals, racially and ethnically minoritized groups, sexual and gender minority populations, and military-affiliated youth. Overall, the articles published in Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment & Prevention in 2025 highlight the growing emphasis on personalized, accessible, and implementation-focused models of care, while underscoring the need for further research to strengthen the evidence base and optimize treatment delivery across diverse clinical settings and populations.
