Abstract: This study examines how couples in long-distance relationships (LDR) separated by more than 700 km use Instagram features to maintain their relationships. Previous studies have focused on text-based platforms, Instagram generally, or individual features, leaving limited understanding of how private and semi-public features work together in relationship maintenance. Using a qualitative multiple-case study within a constructivist paradigm, this research involved four couples (eight informants) connected to Bandung, Indonesia. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and documentation, then analyzed through organization, coding, thematic categorization, and interpretation. Source and technique triangulation and member checking supported data credibility. Findings reveal four Instagram uses: maintaining daily communication, sharing everyday activities, expressing affection, and displaying relationships digitally. These practices represent five maintenance efforts associated with Relationship Maintenance Theory: emotional closeness (positivity), openness, trust and commitment (assurances), involvement in partners’ social networks, and shared experiences (sharing tasks). Social Information Processing Theory provides supplementary insight into how repeated digital interactions help compensate for limited nonverbal cues, without equating online communication with face-to-face interaction. Practices differed among couples and were constrained by factors such as network stability. Informants perceived Instagram as a means of sustaining relationships; however, this study does not establish that Instagram use causes relationship durability.
