Multiple intelligence mapping for strength-based guidance

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Grade X students at a state Catholic religious senior high school in Samosir, North Sumatra, Indonesia, had completed a multiple intelligence inventory, but the results had not been returned to the school in a usable form. This community engagement program mapped the students' multiple intelligence profiles, examined their consistency across two administrations, and returned the results to support strength-based guidance and counseling. All grade X students were invited to complete an 80-item multiple intelligence inventory twice in the second semester of 2024/2025; valid responses were obtained from 40 of 47 students and from 38 students, respectively. Descriptive statistics, Cronbach's alpha, repeated-measures analysis of variance, and test–retest correlations were used. All eight intelligences fell within the moderate range. Intrapersonal, naturalistic, and musical intelligences scored highest, and logical-mathematical intelligence scored lowest. Differences among intelligences were small, their rank order was largely preserved across administrations, and test–retest correlations ranged from .39 to .75. The results were returned to the school through a student feedback session and training for five school personnel. The relatively flat and stable profile served best as a starting point for guidance conversations rather than for labeling students, and the findings should not be generalized beyond this school.
