Bear Creek stream bank extraction: GRASS project with lidar DTM and supporting data (Chatham County, North Carolina)
Year: 2026
Type: dataset
Abstract: GRASS project accompanying the case study "Extraction of stream banks and channel geometry from a lidar-derived DTM" in a manuscript on GRASS as a geocomputational engine submitted to Progress in Physical Geography. The case study adapts the stream channel workflow of the USGS Remote Sensing Scorecard (von Nonn and Petrasova, 2026, https://doi.org/10.5066/P1DYFKAF) to the Headwaters Bear Creek watershed (HUC12 030300030507, 66 km²) in Chatham County, North Carolina. The project (CRS EPSG:6543, NAD83(2011) / North Carolina, US survey feet) contains six maps in the PERMANENT mapset: the bare-earth DTM subset at 3.125 ft resolution from the 2024 QL1 lidar countywide DEM of the North Carolina Emergency Management Spatial Data Download portal; its sky-view factor computed with the r.skyview addon; NAIP orthoimagery resampled to 30 ft; the watershed boundary from the USGS Watershed Boundary Dataset; the NHD flowlines of Bear Creek; and North Carolina county boundaries from the US Census Bureau TIGERweb service. The accompanying Jupyter notebook (https://github.com/baharmon/grass-as-a-geocomputational-engine) derives the stream network, both stream banks by least cost path analysis, and channel width, bank height and channel bottom elevation along the stream. All source data are in the public domain.
