DMT Code Registry: Pre-registered Hypotheses and Analysis Plan, version 1.0
Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Study Protocol
Abstract: Pre-registration of the hypotheses, analysis plan, and stopping rules for the DMT Code symbol registry at dmtcode.com. The registry is an open citizen-science collection of visual symbols reported by people who shine a 650 nm red laser through a diffraction medium during the DMT laser experiment first described by Danny Goler. This document is published before the analyses it describes are run, so that any later result can be checked against a test that was fixed in advance. Three hypotheses are registered. H1 (convergence): symbols submitted by contributors with no prior exposure to the registry cluster more tightly than a permutation baseline. H2 (known-script null): registry symbols do not resemble any known writing system more closely than the writing systems in Unicode resemble each other; an independent shape comparison contributed in October 2026 is adopted as the method for this test. H3 (protocol variables): replicated symbol forms are associated with recorded protocol variables such as wavelength, power, distance and diffraction medium. The document states the data sources, the exclusion rules, the similarity metric, the minimum sample sizes before each test is run, and what will be reported regardless of outcome. The registry's state at the time of registration is recorded in the document. The registry dataset itself is archived separately under the concept DOI 10.5281/zenodo.17816519 and the companion report under 10.5281/zenodo.22101521. This record is a new, independent record and is not a version of either.
