Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This study investigated the relationship between ASD and academic performance of senior secondary school students in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Nigeria. Proportionate sampling technique was adopted to draw a sample of 1106 (530 boys and 576 girls). The instruments used were: the adapted SASRQ Questionnaire, which was originally developed by the University of Stanford and the Mathematics and English Language Performance Test (MELPT), drawn from WAEC past questions in Mathematics and English Language. Instruments were validated by experts in the field of Guidance and Counselling. The Cronbach reliability coefficient of the diagnostic SASRQ Questionnaire was 0.85, and the reliability coefficient of the MELPT performance test, using the Kuder-Richardson formula 20 (KR-20), was 0.70. Data were analysed using linear and multiple regression statistical tools at the 0.05 level of significance. The study found a significant negative association between ASD and academic performance of students who participated in the study. In addition, sex influenced the relationship between ASD and academic performance but was not significant. Based on the findings of this study, the researchers recommend that school counsellors should liaise with school authorities, parents and other stakeholders to ensure relatively peaceful environments to reduce trauma incidents in schools, homes and society.
