Peran Mediasi Fear of Failure Dalam Hubungan Self-compassion Dan Academic Burnout: Studi Pada Mahasiswa Tingkat Akhir

Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Academic burnout is a serious issue among final-year students due to thesis-writing pressure and repeated risk of failure. This study examines the mediating role of fear of failure in the relationship between self-compassion and academic burnout among final-year students. A quantitative correlational design with cross-sectional data collection was applied to 269 final-year Psychology students from the 2023 cohort at Universitas Negeri Surabaya. Data were analyzed using Hayes' PROCESS macro. Results show self-compassion significantly and negatively predicts both fear of failure and academic burnout, while fear of failure significantly and positively predicts academic burnout. Mediation analysis confirmed fear of failure partially mediates the relationship between self-compassion and academic burnout, accounting for 61.1% of the total effect. These findings indicate self-compassion reduces academic burnout mainly through reduced fear of failure, suggesting that strengthening self-compassion should be a key strategy for preventing academic burnout among final-year students.
