Gambaran Altruisme dan Social Exchange pada Suku Bugis Pinrang Perantau di Sorong dan Empat Suku Papua

Abstract: This study aims to describe altruistic behavior and social exchange among Bugis Pinrang migrants and four indigenous Papuan ethnic groups (Biak, Serui, Maybrat, Bintuni) in Sorong City. This study is important because Social Exchange Theory, which originates from a Western perspective, emphasizes cost-benefit considerations as the basis of social behavior, while Indonesian collectivistic societies often demonstrate helping behavior grounded in cultural values and empathy without material calculation. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach with five informants selected purposively, consisting of one Bugis Pinrang informant and four informants from Papuan ethnic groups. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews based on PERMA Well-Being dimensions and Social Exchange Theory aspects, then analyzed using thematic analysis. The results showed that the Bugis Pinrang group more prominently displayed altruism through positive emotions and meaning in life, while the Papuan group more prominently displayed social exchange bound by customs and intergenerational reciprocal obligations. These findings confirm that helping behavior in collectivistic societies cannot be understood solely through cost-benefit logic, but rather needs to consider cultural values and the social position of groups within a region.
