Type: article
Abstract: This study describes the dominant and thwarted needs of Juang Astrajingga in Fiersa Besari's novel Konspirasi Alam Semesta and how they shift across the plot, using Abraham Maslow's theory of human motivation. Using a descriptive-qualitative method and a literary psychology approach, 52 units of text from the whole novel were collected through reading and note-taking and mapped in a matrix of Maslow's five needs and five periods of Juang's life. In childhood, his safety needs were thwarted by bullying and the stigma attached to a family of former political prisoners, while his mother's love served as a buffer. Esteem needs became dominant from adolescence to early adulthood. In the period of Ana, Papua, and the documentary, love and belongingness needs appear most often, and goals beyond the self begin to drive his decisions despite risks to his safety. The documentary is not the climax, as the novel continues until Juang's death at Sinabung. Maslow's hierarchy works as a flexible motivational framework rather than a rigid sequence of stages.
