Abstract: The Green revolution transformed India from being a food-deficit nation to a global agricultural powerhouse. Although, Agriculture continues to be the crucial backbone of the Indian economy employing 42 per cent of India's workforce while contributing 17-18 per cent to the country's GDP, the rates of agricultural productivity gains have begun showing signs of slowing in recent years. Stagnating farmer incomes are also causing considerable distress in the rural areas. There is an urgent need for a transformative change in Indian agriculture to raise productivity, ensure higher incomes, reduce risk, and make Indian agriculture more resilient to climate change and sustainable. This paper discusses the benefits and challenges of large-scale adoption of Precision agriculture as the transformative step forward.
