Synthesis, Characterization, and Antibacterial Efficacy of Cu-ZIF-8: In Vitro Study of Multidrug-Resistant Gram-Positive and Gram-Negative Bacteria
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Recently, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa have become multidrug-resistant (MDR) and produce many virulence factors, posing a health risk. Therefore, addressing knowledge gaps and finding solutions to the challenge caused by bacteria's increased resistance to multiple antibiotics is an urgent need. To address this risk, we aim to synthesize new nanoparticles with long-lasting, safe effects and low toxicity. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials with high efficiency in inhibiting or killing MDR bacteria. In this investigation, we successfully synthesized copper-doped ZIF-8 (Cu-ZIF-8) nanocomposites using the solvothermal method. Its characteristics were studied using techniques like SEM, FTIR, EDX, and XRD. The Cu-ZIF-8-MOF exhibited high antibacterial efficacy against S. aureus (Gram-positive) and P. aeruginosa (Gram-negative), with concentrations of 12.5, 25, 50, and 100 μg/mL showing high efficiency against P. aeruginosa. In contrast, it was less effective against S. aureus. These results open up wide prospects for the application of the Cu-ZIF-8-MOF antimicrobial agent.
