Abstract: The problem in this study is the low initial reading ability of fourth-grade blind students at SLB-A YAPTI Makassar. This study aims to: (1) Determine the initial reading ability of fourth-grade blind students before using the Mangold technique, (2) Determine the initial reading ability of blind students after using the Mangold technique, and (3) Determine the increase in the initial reading ability of blind students through the use of the Mangold technique. This study uses a quantitative approach with a descriptive research type. The subject in this study was a blind student who experienced visual impairments with a classification of total blindness with the initials NES. Data collection techniques used were tests, observation and documentation. Data were analyzed using quantitative descriptive techniques to determine the initial reading ability of students before and after using the Mangold technique through the results of the pretest and posttest. The results showed that the initial reading ability of fourth-grade blind students at SLB-A YAPTI Makassar before using the Mangold technique was in the very low category. After participating in learning for ten meetings using the Mangold technique, the students' initial reading ability increased from the very low category to high. Thus, it can be concluded that the Mangold technique is able to improve the initial reading skills of grade IV blind students at SLB-A YAPTI Makassar.
